2012 (in songs)

So this is it, another cliché generic blogpost about the end of the year. Just like the last one, I’ll no longer be waxing lyrical about my year, mentioning each and everyone EVER.

BUT this I can say: 2012 has been both the best and worst year out of my lifetime. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done this year if it hadn’t been for a certain special person. I got into a blogging funk too, as I’m sure you noticed, but these past few weeks I’ve had lots of new ideas and hope to keep ‘em coming in 2013! See you there!

For now, here’s a mix of the 28 songs I enjoyed most this year. The majority dates back to this very year but several things are from last year or a lot of years ago. Hope you enjoy.

Nudity, mirror neurons and… more nudity with Led Er Est

I conducted this interview for the November issue of Subbacultcha! but it never got published. Though I was not acquainted with the band before the interview took place, I enjoyed talking to them so much I thought I’d post it here.

Sam Kklovenhoof: Sorry I was a little late. I was actually just shovelling manure into the garden and lost track of time. A whole truckload. It was crazy.
Owen Hutchinson: I ate the first cantaloupe I grew this summer for breakfast.

How domestic. Onto a more topical question then: have you guys ever felt naked on stage? (as in, when something went wrong / you were nervous)
Shawn O’Sullivan: (laughs) Owen has a good answer,
OH: Hah yes, for a couple shows early on I’d perform naked or as the set would progress remove items of clothes until the final song I was completely nude. Shawn and Sam accuse me of having done this more times than I actually did but often I’d wear nude leggings, which appeared as though I was naked but not actually.
SO: In Naples we got drinks thrown at us because Owen was naked.

Was that something spontaneous during a show or something you’d come up with before playing?
OH: It was based on feeling of audience, venue or level of drunkenness and as a thank you or a fuck you depending on mood.

Basically Owen, you just like getting naked?
OH: Errr… birthday suit
SO: Owen used to get naked way more though, even at non-LEE events but we’ve all gotten a little tamer.
OH: I wear 3 piece suits now. The other extreme. And I cover my face a lot.
SO: To answer an earlier question: in addition to Owen’s literal stage nudity, we’ve definitely dealt with a lot of on-stage panic moments that have made us feel figuratively nude.

Is there a situation in particular you recall?
SO: The tuning on my sh09 going bonkers in Milan in the middle of the set, the humidity of the venue made it go haywire.
OH
: That one time in Berlin when my synth just stopped working and I had to use one of Xeno and Oaklanders.
SO
: Yeah that was a rough moment. The last show, that Sam and I played, we didn’t get to soundcheck and I had to play without my reverb unit – that definitely made me feel naked.
OH
: Not having soundcheck is bad for us it happens all the time because we play a lot of small spaces that aren’t real concert venues e.g. an Ethiopian restaurant in Richmond, Virginia. So we often run into serious problems mid set.

I was gonna ask you the first question in reverse: have you ever thought of the audience as naked to make yourself more comfortable/because you were nervous?
SK
: No.
SO: we’re all usually drunk enough that we’re not nervous.
OH: Yes but not to make myself less nervous, just to imagine. And not everyone Like those goggles that let you see thru peoples’ clothes.

Being in a band mostly involves some serious intimacy. Recording an album I reckon things get pretty personal. Did you guys ever come to a point where you felt too much was exposed?
SO
: I think we’re all pretty comfortable with each other at this point. We’ve been through a lot, as a band and as friends. Owen and I have known each other for like 10 years and Sam and I were buddies for a while before the band but I guess our friendship really grew out of working together. We get along well. Sometimes we drive each other a little nuts but none of us are huge drama queens or drug addicts or anything.
OH
: We’ve seen each other in so many different phases, with so much context around our friendships it is easier to understand and work things out. I feel blessed to have collaborators whom I like so much that hanging out feels as productive and enjoyable as working on music with.
SO
: Awww I almost teared up a bit there Owen. Now I feel a little naked (laughs).

(small silence) Are you collectively crying right now?
OH
: No, but mirror neurons (the neuron “mirrors” the behavior of the other, as though the observer were itself acting, ed.) are cool.
SO
: Whoa I indexed a book on social cognition last week! There was a bunch of stuff on mirror neurons in that.

If you were sent to a desert island naked and you’d be able to bring only 5 items, what’d you bring? Clothes can’t be one of them.
SO: I guess I’d just bring my modular synth and a laptop for internet access because they always have internet on desert islands.
SK
: Champagne yeast, a Swiss army knife, neosporin, a flint stone, and a sewing kit.
OH
: Solar satellite tv, a masseuse, a nice couch and lifetime supply of chips.

Do you have a favourite part of the human body? One you could write an infinite amount of songs about?
OH: Teeth.
SK
: I think for like kids songs or something I could do some body parts but for LEE I don’t really know. I did some instrumentals for a children’s book I wanted to make about the body. I never finished it but I did make a good track for hair follicles. Only the future holds those answers!

Wastelands

Oh dear, I’ve seriously neglected this blog in the past two months… Can’t believe how out of the loop I’ve been. I guess it means I didn’t have time but also didn’t feel like there was anything worth writing about. There kind of was though, but it took up so much of my time that I didn’t even think about writing anything about it.

Yep, that’s right, I co-organised a festival that took place on Saturday. The whole story began back in February, when Kasper-Jan told Herlinde and I we were organising a festival, just like that. There was no use in disagreeing, and so we agreed. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster since with especially the last month being very busy but all our hard work paid off cause it couldn’t have run more smoothly!

We almost sold out beforehand and it didn’t take long on the day to actually sell out. The crowd was a mixture of everything and everyone: from young to old, foreign to Belgian. We had Vegan Peasant taking care of the catering and cooking up some delicious foods and of course our artists playing great sets! And on top of that everyone was super nice and grateful (from the audience over the volunteers and catering to the artists themselves). I couldn’ thave been more pleased with the outcome and won’t forget the experience too soon.

Whether or not there’ll be another edition in the future is unclear for now but I’m not sure we could ever top last Saturday. Here are a couple of pictures that capture the atmosphere perfectly:

(Maria Minerva from far away)

(that’s me down there to the right, in the white dress)

(Ruud performing as Tina Sabrina Joyce during Pictureplane’s set)

(John Maus)

I took lots with a disposable too so you’ll see those appear in the next couple of days / weeks.

Just Stuff I Like #4

The absolutely stunning jewellery by Pichulik.
Never have I been so in love with any necklace as I am with these.
Little pieces of art really.

This awesome zine by Pauline, given to me after the La Sera show two weeks ago.
It’s most definitely my favourite zine in terms of design. Real DIY in the most pretty way.
Pauline writes about music and more in French, request your copy by emailing sn0w_white@hotmail.fr.

 All of Ben Lewiscollages.
These are a few of my favourites from his most recent ones.
My favourite kind of art is the one that contains humour so I dig this, a lot.

Thanks to the awesome Miss Moss for linking me to the first and third – credit where credit’s due.

Le Guess Who? May Day

This video from Le Guess Who? May Day is making me so nostalgic! Taking place on the 26th of last month, I once again had the most splendid time in the lovely city that is Utrecht. I just wanna watch this over and over until November 29th when the full version of the festival starts again.

PS: find me enthusiastically headbanging at around 01:58. I reckon this was during Cloud Nothings who played a stellar set. Such awesome times!!

Mikal Cronin

Is a righteous dude. Really fucking righteous. I have trouble coming up with anything else or more cause righteous just sums it up so well. Basically, for his relatively young age (not sure how old he is exactly), Mikal Cronin‘s done A LOT of things.

(like standing on cars for example – told you he’s righteous)

He released his self-titled debut LP last year and I’ve only now gotten to know it and it is ruling my world! True rock ‘n roll mixed with some singer-songwriting and a damn good voice. A timeless combination that he’s somehow given a new dimension and brought to a new level. He just makes it sound fresh and new and yet, it’s something that could’ve totally come out decades ago.

I just enjoy his stuff a lot, and then some more. Mikal’s a boss! And I can’t wait to see him live tonight, together with R. Stevie Moore and Moon Duo.

Little Label Love: Burger Records

A little while after the first installment (on Italian Beach Babes, read here) I found another little label that I think deserves more attention: Burger Records from Fullerton, California.

In March, in the space of two weeks, I was confronted with Burger Records t-shirts twice. The very first time it was my friend John wearing them at fabrIQ festival and since I didn’t know anything about the label back then, he told me about it. Burger Records is a store as well as a label and mostly releases cassette tapes. A lot of the time they’ll be records that are also released on cd or vinyl and then they provide you with a tape version.
Sometimes they’re exclusive Burger Records releases though. Whatever the case, all the stuff they put out is awesome and so are the two dudes behind the label: Lee and Sean. They were so kind as to make time in their extremely busy schedule and I cannot thank them enough! Here goes…

In short: what’s the history of BRGR? How/when/why?
Lee: (spoken in a deep southern accent) burgers been on my brain for a lonnng time. I have a love for reading trashy rock bios and learning about my favourite bands history i.e. The Beatles and Apple, The Turtles and Blimp, The Kinks and Konk and The Beach Boys and Brother etc etc. We’ve been using the name for a handful of years before the first official Burger release came out in 2007. That was Thee Makeout Party!’s  2 Ez 2 Luv U 7″.

Was the store first? Can you tell me a bit more about the store? Is the label something you do next to the store?
The store came a little later, in October 2009. The store is how we live our day to day, basically juggling the label and the store balancing between the front and the back just trying to make ends meet. The store rules! It’s where we curate shows for bands, movie nights, provocative performance art, any kind of random weirdness at any given time. Elenore the shop cat is definitely in charge! A real life Garfield.

How do you manage? Doesn’t exactly seem very easy to me!
Sean’s speechless.
It’s not easy… Efficient time management is the key to succes. We’re losing our marbles every other week around here, might as well call this cuckoo town but we manage!

I’m guessing you all like eating burgers and that’s simply the reason you went for the name Burger Records? What’s your favourite burger?
Lee: my favourite burger has flame toasted buns, fresh veggies, grilled onions, bacon, some sort of cheese, avocado and an egg. I WOULD EAT THAT BURGER!
Sean: any homemade burger! Flames are best!

Do you guys have a favourite record label? One that sets the example for you?
We have a lot of favourite labels but Recess Records of San Pedro, California set an example for us by running shit on pure love, passion and fun out of a bedroom and just spreading the rock ‘n roll gospel, one show at a time, across the whole wide world!

If you could have another Burger Records store anywhere in the world, where would you most like to see one and why?
Probably San Francisco, Oakland. There’s so much Burger love in the bay. It always has rock ‘n roll, it’s always thriving. But there’s been talk of Burger town in Detroit, picking up where Motown left off. A recording studio/living quarters/store front.

Finish the next two sentences:
I would definitely release anything by a band that… has David Lee Roth fronting the band.
I would never release anything by a band that… has Sammy Hagar fronting the band. (he replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen, ed.)

To endorse your brand, anyone in the world you’d like could be wearing a Burger Recs tee. Who would you love to see walking around in one?
Bill Clinton. Burger loves Bill Clinton! He is a nasty man, Bill Clinton is a Burger bitch. But if Prince wore a purple Fuck Burger pin that’s the ultimate, we would all get super horny!

A Troubled See

Oh Lord, this new Girls Names track is too great. Got into these guys way too late (as in: last month) but super duper excited about seeing them live on Saturday and perhaps also next Monday. We’re going to Le Guess Who? May Day on Saturday and I cannot wait. The full festival last year was one of the most happy and rejuvenating experiences of my life. It is also no secret that I adore the city of Utrecht where it all takes place.

Anyway, this new Girls Names track is called A Troubled See and apart from the dreamy vocals, it’s the divine guitar parts that stand out the most. Just makes me want to sway my head left to right, eyes slightly closed, smiling all the way. I bloody love it, basically.

Out 25th of June through Tough Love in Euro and Slumberland in the US.

We Promised III: the DIY issue!

Is out now! We had our release party yesterday and it was a lot of fun but I didn’t stay too late cause I was so exhausted/unable to form grammatically correct sentences from 5 days of tape recording and poster folding. All worth it though! So proud of our third edition. Definitely my favourite yet.
Featured artists are Street Gnar, Islet, Bleached, Novella, PINS, U.S Girls, John Maus vs. Molly Nilsson, Girlseeker, Flamingods, Sean Nicholas Savage and NZCA/LINES! And there are articles on Slumberland Records and Belmont Bookings!

Once I’ve been able to put this edition online in a way I’ll make sure to update this and include it but for now, here are some bad Photobooth pictures!

(it’s a poster!)

(it’s a folded poster with tape!)

(it’s a zine!)

(it’s just a tape!)

(it’s all of that and more!)

Small Hands and Weighed Sin

Two random, completely beautiful in their own way, videos I’ve been watching a lot lately.
The first one by Keaton Henson not just for the song, but for the stunning, heart wrenching stop motion animation. Never thought stuffed puppets could translate this much emotion and be a metaphor for life itself. The song is equally haunting.
(thanks to Jacoba for this)

Next up is the amazing Chad VanGaalen who’s pretty much a hero to me and one of te nicest people I’ve ever met. Here he does a live rendition of Weighed Sin, off a split with Xiu Xiu. So much raw emotion in his voice, stunning to watch. Beautiful beyond words.
